Northern Tier Outfitting Program

Northern Tier’s outfitting program is open to crew’s that have attended Northern Tier during the last 3 years and are interested in a unit canoe program.  It allows for crews, with previous Northern Tier experience to participate in a canoe trip, utilizing their own leadership.  Northern Tier can assist with full outfitting of the trip or just providing minimal equipment for the trip, based on the needs of the crew.

Crews wanting to participate in a fully outfitted trip through this option, need to make a reservation in the summer reservation system.  Once that trip is booked an paid, they can contact our staff at 218.365.4811 to request a Voyageur Brigade.  Our staff will review the history of your crew and insure that all requirements are met.  If they are met, they will transition your traditional reservation to a Voyageur Brigade.

All crews utilizing Northern Tier’s Outfitting Services must meet all Boy Scouts of America Youth Protection and Guide to Safe Scouting requirements for the trip, as well as the US Forest Service and/or Quetico Provincial Parks Regulations.

Each crew must provide the following leadership:

  • Two registered adult leaders 21 years of age or over are required at all Scouting activities, including meetings. There must be a registered female adult leader 21 years of age or over in every unit serving females. A registered female adult leader 21 years of age or over must be present for any activity involving female youth.
  • 2 participants must have completed Wilderness First Aid Training or equivalent (minimum 16-hour in person course) through an approved vendor.
  • One adult must have previously participated in a traditional Northern Tier summer expedition. This expedition must have taken place within 3 years of the requested upcoming trip.
  • At least one adult that has completed the following trainings:
    • Hazardous Weather Training
    • Safe Swim Defense
    • Safety Afloat
  • All participants age 18 and older must have current youth protection training certificate.
  • Any crew booking a trip utilizing Northern Tier canoes, will be required to attend Northern Tier orientation and review all USFS and/or Quetico Provincial Parks videos.

CO-ED/FEMALE CREW POLICIES

  • Crews with coed youth members must function under appropriate co-ed unit policies. • Scouts BSA Troops: Scouts BSA is a single gender program and units must register and paricipate as single-gender units.
  • Venuring Crews: The venturing program is a co-ed program and units may register and participate as a co-ed crew. All youth must have a buddy of the same gender on the crew.
  • Crews with female youth are required to provide two adults age 21 and over, at least one of those adults must be a female Advisor. A female adult is required, even if female youth’s father is in attendance.

Triple Crown and Grand Slam Qualifying:
