Conference and Retreat Facilities

Northern Tier

Northern Tier is Scouting America’s gateway to adventure in the Great Northwoods. In the summer, Northern Tier crews paddle in almost 6 million acres of exclusively canoe-access wilderness from the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) of Minnesota to the Atikaki Provincial Park of Manitoba. Trips range in length from 6-14 days and usually include between 50-150 miles of wilderness travel.

In the winter, Northern Tier is home to the Okpik Cold Weather Camping program, the BSA’s premier winter high adventure program. Fall trips are also available.

During the Fall and Spring Northern Tier has conference facilities available for your use. From church retreats, school field trips, corporate planning retreats, weddings, senior pictures, and more we, can host your event in our diverse facilities.

Sandy Bridges Program Center

The Program Center serves as a central hub to most conferences we host. It features a dining hall, trading post (store), one conference room with the ability to divide and create two, and a variety of sitting areas including a deck which overlooks Moose Lake.

Capacity:

  • Dining Hall: 270 people
  • Large Conference Room: 48 (or 2 rooms of 24 each)
  • Smaller Conference Room: 24

Each room is equipped with a television for digital projection, white boards, flip charts and flexible seating.

The Historic Lodge

The Lodge, built between 1941-1942 served as the first operations center for the Charles L. Sommers Base in Ely. Today the building is primarily used to host a nightly pre-departure briefing for all participants and it houses the Northern Tier Interpretive Center. This meeting room features two digital projectors and screens as well as audio equipment. The interpretive center tells the story of Northern Tier and the areas of historical importance. The meeting space can seat approximately 75.
