The Northern Tier Staff Experience

Northern Tier Staff Experience

Since 2013, Northern Tier has been fortunate to have Midshipmen from the US Naval Academy serve as Interpreters throughout the summer. Some of the Midshipmen from 2014 collaborated on a terrific article about their time at Northern Tier that truly speaks to the NT Staff Experience. Read the article here.

Other Testimonials

After leaving Northern Tier this summer there is a something that has stuck with me. I was walking to the end of Prairie Portage ( the side with the check in office), when I saw an interpreter standing by himself with the canoe in the water. I could tell that he had been out for a few days. His face was tan, tired and his clothing a bit muddy. As he stood there looking out on to Basswood Lake, he knew he would be paddling straight into the wind. Continuing to stand there I could see the determination, pride and leadership in the way he presented himself. When his crew came he jumped in the canoe and pushed off from shore, just as the many before him had. Then he took off down the lake with a bit of a smirk on his face. In that moment he represented the life of an interpreter. I saw myself reflected back at me, and knew the pride and joy he had, was something I wanted to be a part of too.

I only left NT 50 some hours ago and already Northwoods fever is setting in hard. Lie down, try not to cry, cry a lot

After being in denial that the summer is over I am finally feeling reality kick in. I’m now just with my brothers up in Caseville. My days spending time with northern tier people are over. In reflect of the summer, I truely feel like the summer of 2013 has been the best summer I have ever had. I will hold on to these memories till the end of my days. Northern Tier forever.

“There is a specific moment in my adolescence that was so profound, it fundamentally changed me. When I experienced
Northern Tier as a youth, I learned real lessons about who I was and who I could become. As a Northern Tier staff member, I have the distinguished honor and privilege to create in others a defining moment that will live in them
forever and may even have the power to fundamentally change them as well.”

“As much as I wanted to return on staff this year, I was recently given an internship opportunity that I couldn’t pass up. Even though I won’t be on staff this summer, I did want to thank you. Working at Northern Tier was my first job ever but it gave me enough ‘real job’ experience to get an internship this summer in my Biological Sciences major. Say ‘hi’ to everyone for me!”

“I would sincerely like to thank you for the employment opportunity that you provided me this summer. Working with the BSA for a second summer was a wonderful opportunity and I am proud to have been a part of Northern Tier.”

“I wanted to thank you guys for working with me and signing off on my course requirements this summer. I learned more about outdoor leadership this summer at Northern Tier than I ever could have learned in a classroom. I am so glad I was able to figure everything out with my academic advisor and get school credit for being on staff. My friends were paying to sit in a classroom this summer while I was getting paid AND getting school credit- winning!”

“Thanks for hiring me this summer. I’ve always thought about becoming an adventure trip leader and you gave me the training and experience to make it happen. I can’t wait to advance my skills even further when I return on staff in 9 months.”

“In hindsight, I realize that it wasn’t always easy or fun (in the conventional sense that is) but my time on staff was incredibly rewarding. I will never forget it.”
